Number 20
A pummelling show from a new-comer.
#20: JUSTIN NUNN – 130 vs Tullamarine. 2nds XI. 1995/96
Nunny was new to the club and I didn’t know much about him. I was opening the batting in the 2nds that season but was disturbed by the sight of Tulla’s 1st XI express opening bowler Danny Sexton measuring his run-up – he’d been dropped for disciplinary reasons. I remember saying to my enigmatic batting partner Cam “IceMan” Viola, “Shit, there’s gonna be no relief today mate.” Sexton had a point to prove. Steaming in, wearing a Rambo head-band, he was on a mission. Within a few overs, we were 2/12 and I remember thinking, “We’re in real trouble.” All that changed when Nunny strolled to the crease and put on a batting display like nothing I’d seen before. He absolutely pummelled the Tulla attack. Not slogging. Just good cricket shots with POWER. I had the best seat in the house. Nunny departed on 130 with the score now 3/235. That partnership still remains in the top 10 highest partnerships at TLCC. For years, whenever I bumped into Nunny, this day was ALWAYS the first thing we talked about. And I’m sure the next time I see
him, we’ll have smiles from ear to ear as the first thing we’ll say is, “How good was that day against Tulla?”
